The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
