In a freshly published personal account, called Ithaki, the ex- premier Tsipras pulls no punches while he examines the chaotic period of Greece's economic turmoil.
An Unconventional Choice
As per Tsipras's account, Tsipras chose that unorthodox economist Varoufakis to be his finance minister largely due to his global profile along with his highly compelling skills as a speaker.
“He was, in reality, more like a star and less of an economist,” stated Tsipras.
Conflicting Agendas
Tsipras claims that Varoufakis possessed a personal agenda that included advancing Varoufakis's publications as well as experimenting with his own game theories on Greece rather than genuinely fighting for its financial survival.
He noted that the discussions to stave off insolvency were “not just a way to secure a better deal for Greece. They became a test, an historic chance to demonstrate the truth of Varoufakis's economic theories.”
Critical Talks
During rollercoaster negotiations, the country came perilously close to leaving the single currency area.
On the line lay not only Greece's future but also the harsh cutbacks required in return for bailout funds by foreign lenders.
Unsuccessful Alternatives
Attempts to find financing elsewhere, such as a desperate plea to Russia to purchase Greek government bonds, went unanswered.
Helping the indebted country would be tantamount to throwing money in the trash-can, the Russian leader reportedly informed Tsipras during their meeting.
Public Vote Followed by U-Turn
That summer, those punitive bailout terms were put to a public vote, an action which plunged Europe into deeper crisis of identity.
Although the vote was won resoundingly by voters against the cuts, Tsipras was forced to ignore the result then agree to a bailout package with creditors that proved to be tougher.
Final Straw
Tsipras revealed that he began to doubt his finance minister quite early on.
“He was the public image of negotiation, the figure who attracted media attention, who graced the front pages of magazines the world over … he gave the impression he relished the spotlight.”
After Varoufakis proposed a contingency plan involving establishing a parallel currency as well as distributing coupons to retirees, Tsipras knew it was game over questioning Varoufakis: “Are you serious?”
Lasting Rebuke
In the memoir, the author concludes how his former ally had proved himself to be “unsuitable for an agreement demanding intricate and delicate handling.”
Tsipras also claimed how his confrontational style made him increasingly isolated with colleagues, endangered the country, and helped hawks that were pushing for Grexit.
The retelling of history has been met with fury and stunned disbelief among certain groups, while Varoufakis has maintained a conspicuous quiet regarding these claims.
